How to Practice Self-care When it Feels Like the World Is Crumbling

Hey there!  Are you waking up with phlegm in your throat? Sneezing a bit more? Noticing some extra sleep in your eyes?

Having some stagnation issues? Having a hard time getting going in the morning?  Don’t worry—it’s just increased Kapha because honey we are in her season now.

A quick recap for those who are new here–in Ayurveda we view the world through the lens of five elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) and put those elements into three categories called doșas (pronounced dosha)–vata (ether and air), pitta (fire and water), and kapha (earth and water).

Just as Earth is starting to thaw around us, so are our bodies.  What happens when melted snow/ice and earth blend together? We get mud!  This is kind of how we can view what’s happening internally.  We are thawing out from the winter, our internal organs are kicking back on, and things are just a bit sludgy. You see, our bodies naturally thicken things up in the winter to help keep us warmer in the cold weather.

We put on a little extra weight increasing meda dhatu to help us stay warm and grounded in the cold harsh winter months.  Our rasa dhatu and rakta dhatu get a little sweeter and thicker to do the same.  Come March when the temperatures start to increase and the days get a bit longer, that thickening has to thin so our bodies can prepare for the heat of summer.  We don’t need the extra protection when the days are long and hot!  We need things to move fluidly and freely.

So what does this mean on a practical level?  Well we need to eat seasonally of course!

What foods are you seeing popping up?  Start incorporating more leafy greens and swap the heavy kapha provoking foods (lots of grains, heavy, hearty meals) you’ve been eating all winter when you need to feel safe and grounded for some lighter kapha pacifying meals with plenty of beans and greens.

Start trying to increase your movement to get your lymph moving. Start using your neti pot to get mucus moving.  Scrape your tongue every morning to remove buildup. You might even try dry brushing and aim to get up a bit earlier in the morning. Now of course, we want to consider our own prakruti (constitution) so that we find that balance for our unique selves of these practices. If you have high kapha, get to it.

These practices will be balancing for you. However if you’re super ungrouded with high vata, go easy so you don’t deplete yourself.

I’m writing this blog because all of us are feeling the effects of the state of things right now, even if we’re not aware of it, because we are all connected no matter how much we try to forget that.

I am in it too. I’m here with you. I do not have it all figured out and I’m certainly not perfect. There are days that these priorities fall to the side and I slip into not so helpful patterns. When this happens, I notice it and course correct–and if I have capacity I reflect on what triggered the slip so that I can resource more around that area or create guardrails as best I can.

Some days are more challenging than others and I’m still navigating the ups and downs too.

Ultimately, I hope to be able to hold and share space with others who are also trying to figure it out & make the world a better place. Thanks for being here with me!
